ストーリー

【第一幕】

王子タミーノが大蛇に追われ気絶したところへ夜の女王の３人の侍女が現れ、大蛇を退治しタミーノを助ける。タミーノが目を覚ますと、たまたま通りかかったパパゲーノが「大蛇を倒したのは自分だ！」と嘘をつく。侍女たちは嘘をついたパパゲーノに罰を与え、タミーノには夜の女王の娘パミーナの絵姿を見せる。タミーノはパミーナに一目惚れ。そこへ夜の女王が現れ「娘がザラストロにさらわれた」と悲しみを訴え、もし娘を助けてくれるのなら娘をやろうと約束をする。

パミーナ救出に向かうタミーノには魔法の笛が、タミーノのお供をするパパゲーノには魔法の鈴が渡され、３人の童子が道案内をすることになる。

ザラストロの神殿では、ザラストロに仕える番人モノスタトスに言い寄られているパミーナを、パパゲーノが救う。一方のタミーノは、悪僧だと思っていたザラストロが実は高僧であることを弁者から知らされる。その後、魔法の笛と鈴の力で導き合ったタミーノとパミーナは、ザラストロの前でついに対面し、一目で愛を確信する。そしてザラストロの命によりタミーノとパパゲーノは試練を受けることになる。

【第二幕】

タミーノはパミーナと結ばれるために、パパゲーノは恋人を得るために、試練へと向かう。タミーノは意気地のないパパゲーノを励ましながら、着実に試練を乗り越えていく。

一方パミーナは、モノスタトスに再び言い寄られたり、ザラストロへの復讐に燃える母（夜の女王）からザラストロの殺害を命じられたり、沈黙の試練を受けているタミーノに無視されたりと、さまざまな辛い目にあう。しかしザラストロや３人の童子に励まされ、タミーノと共に試練に立ち向かい、魔法の笛の力に助けられて試練を乗り越える。

辛抱するのが大嫌いなパパゲーノは、試練から脱落してしまう。それでも魔法の鈴の力を借りて若い娘パパゲーナと出会い、結ばれる。

神殿にはザラストロを裏切ったモノスタトスに導かれた夜の女王と侍女達が復讐に訪れていたが、ザラストロの力に追い払われる。

悪の脅威が去った神殿には試練に打ち勝ったタミーノとパミーナが迎えられ祝福される。

Story

Act 1

Tamino, a prince lost in a distant land, is pursued by a serpent and faints from fatigue. Three ladies, attendants of the Queen of the Night, appear and kill the serpent. When Tamino comes to his senses, the bird-hunter Papageno makes his entrance, claiming to have killed the serpent. The ladies return and punish Papageno for his lies. They give Tamino a portrait of Pamina, the daughter of the Queen of the Night. Tamino immediately falls in love with the girl. The Queen of the Night appears, tells Tamino about the loss of her daughter who has been captured by the evil Sarastro, and commands him to rescue her, promising him that Pamina will be his if he succeeds in rescuing her from Sarastro.

Tamino sets out to search for Pamina. The ladies give Tamino a magic flute, and tell Papageno to accompany him, giving him magic bells. Three boys sent by the ladies guide them to Sarastro’s palace.

At Sarastro’s palace, Papageno rescues Pamina from Monostatos, Sarastro's slave who has been forcing his attentions on Pamina. Tamino learns from a Speaker of the temple that Sarastro is not corrupt, but in fact is a priest of high virtue.

Finally Tamino and Pamina get to meet each other, led by the magical power of the flute and the bells. At the very moment of their first encounter, they are sure of their love. Tamino and Papageno are told by Sarastro to undergo a series of trials to prove their virtue.

Act 2

Tamino and Papageno leave for their trials; Tamino, with purpose of proving himself worthy of Pamina, and Papageno, with purpose of finding himself a wife. Tamino overcomes the challenges steadily, encouraging his companion, the weak-willed Papageno. Pamina goes through several hardships. She is followed by Monostatos again, and is told by her mother, the Queen of the Night, to kill Sarastro. She feels heart-broken when Tamino refrains from speaking to her because he is undergoing the test of “silence”. But with the help of Sarastro, the three boys, and the magic flute, she faces the challenges with Tamino and overcomes them at last.

Papageno falls behind, being not at all good at exercising patience. However, he also meets a young girl Papagena with the help of magic bells and marries her in the end.

The traitorous Monostatos appears, leading the revengeful Queen of the Night and the three ladies into the temple, but they are cast out into eternal night.

The palace is now freed from the threat of evil, and Sarastro welcomes Tamino and Pamina, who have endured their trials, and unites them.
